Monte Vista and Rio Grande County's economy is based primarily on two sources. Agriculture is the largest contributor and is followed by government, including headquarters for the Rio Grande National Forest.

Sales taxes now being assessed in the area include 2% for the City, 2.6% for the County and 2.9% for the State. State tax is not collected on food.
